Visit our detailed profiles for Stan Wawrinka vs Grigor Dimitrov.
This evening after 19 h, the best Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov goes out for his first match at the US Open in 2018. His rival is as familiar and as subtle - the tireless Swiss fighter Stanislas Wawrinka.
This will be the 8th clash between the two and the second for the calendar year. In principle, we are used to having players of such caliber to meet far ahead in a Grand Slam tournament, but Wawrinka is now playing with the Wild Card.
Certainly the psychological advantage, if we can talk about such in view of the two-time results of the two, will be the 33-year-old veteran. Wawrinka eliminated Dimitrov in the first round of Wimbledon this season, achieving a turn in four sets (1: 6, 7: 6 (3), 7: 6 (5), 6: 4). With this victory, the Swiss interrupted a series of four consecutive defeats from the Khaskovo, though immediately after it lost to the notorious Italian Thomas Fabiano. After Wimbledon, Wawrinka’s only losses came from Donald Young (in the first round of the Washington tournament), Rafael Nadal (1/8-finals in Toronto) and Roger Federer (¼ final at Cincinnati).
From the Wimbledon match, Grigor had a tough victory over Fernando Verdasco and Francis Thiafo in Toronto, where he was thrown by Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals. In Cincinnati the Bulgarian could not defend his title, but he had a very heavy draw. In the first round, he overcame Misha Zverev’s “client” and immediately met the rebounding Novak Djokovic, against whom he lost in a great 3-match match.
So far, this series of four consecutive victories gives Grigor an advantage in the clash with Wawrinka. Their current duel of Arthur Ash will be their third on hard floor. They met three times on clay and twice on grass. On Wardrinka’s hard court he beat Astrellon Open in 2011, while Grigor won his win last year at Cincinnati on his way to the title.
